Letter from the Chair
Greetings and welcome to the 2nd issue of Red Apple Press!
On behalf of everyone involved in writing, sourcing images and publishing Red Apple Press, I sincerely hope that 2019 has started off successfully for you and wish you the best in the year ahead.

I want to take this opportunity to convey my appreciation to everyone who helped in hosting Ancestors Day III back in September 2018. Your efforts were essential and greatly valued. AD III was a big success thanks to you.
Nearly 100 people joined us for the event, and I’m pleased to say it was the largest turnout we’ve had yet. I want to express my appreciation to each of you, and particularly those who traveled from out of town.
For everyone who traces their history to the Standish clan, AD III was especially noteworthy because the fall celebration coincided with the 200th anniversary of the Standish family’s arrival in Canada from Ireland in 1818. I also want to recognize the descendants of Joseph Standish who hosted their own 200th anniversary event in Georgetown last September
AD III was also made memorable by the participation of numerous members of the Cummings family, who made the trip to Rougemont from their homes in far-away California. Most were joining us for the first time. We hope they enjoyed reconnecting with their Rougemont roots — after all, that’s what Ancestors Day is all about — and we look forward to seeing them again at future events.
Also worthy of note, Hugh Cummings, son of Glenna Standish, celebrated his 90th birthday in 2018. We wish him many more birthday celebrations to come!
Sadly, 2018 marked the passing of Joyce Standish, a matriarch of the Cookshire clan. From all of us, condolences to her family and friends.
Again, thanks to everyone who participated in AD III, and we look forward to an even better celebration and bigger turnout at AD IV in the fall of 2020.
Red Apple Press, Issue #2
In each issue of our newsletter, we intend to profile one of Rougemont’s early residents, using surviving documents, passed-on recollections and other source material. The objective of these profiles is to pay tribute to their lives and memories as well as to bring historic Rougemont to life in a meaningful way.

Last issue, we profiled John E. Standish (1853 - 1940). In this issue, we explore the life and legacy of Jethro Bachelder (1840 - 1933). We hope you enjoy the issue and look forward to your feedback.

Additionally, I direct your attention to our website, www.ancestorsday.org. Development of the site is an ongoing project of our committee. We plan to continue uploading new images and other content as it becomes available to us to keep the website fresh and add to the historical record. I encourage you to bookmark the address and revisit it from time to time to see what’s new.
In particular, we’ve been adding new material to the “Rougemont Families” headstone gallery, which is accessible under the “Rougemont History” link in the main navigation. At any time, you can click on your favorite family name under the “Rougemont Families” link and take a stroll into Rougemont’s past. You never know where you’ll end up — and you won’t regret the time spent!
As part of our improvements to this section, we’ve added the ability for visitors to write comments on the pages that display the headstones. Now you can easily leave personal messages, contribute relevant historical information and share memories and stories about your Rougemont forebears.
We’ve also created new content sections dedicated to preserving pictures and videos from our Ancestors Day events. There are now separate sections for AD I, AD II and AD III under the Events link in the main navigation. We encourage you to visit these pages, and please don’t hesitate to send us your own pictures and videos so that we can add them to the sections.
As always, we also encourage you send us photos of family members, Rougemont memorabilia and the like that we can display on the site for the enjoyment and appreciation of everyone.
If sending digital copies of photos, email them to info@ancestorsday.org.
If sending hard copies of photos by regular mail, address them to:

Request for Donations
Let me conclude by doing something that I wish I didn’t have to do. If you find value in our efforts to celebrate and honour our shared heritage, I’d like to request that you consider making a small donation to help us cover the financial costs associated with Ancestors Day.

Please understand that the people who give their time and energy to creating this newsletter, along with the Ancestors Day website and the bi-annual events in Rougemont, do so out of sense of reverence for our unique past and a commitment to preserving this history for future generations.
No one on the committee receives financial compensation for their contributions. Rather, the opposite is true. There are certain unavoidable costs, including website hosting, webmaster services and professional content writing and editing, that the committee members have been absorbing themselves.

Your assistance in covering these expenses will help ensure we can continue this labour of love to remember and honour our remarkable forebears and their rich history. For information on how you can support Ancestors Day, visit our donations page.
